Beavers, Trojans Stay Atop Pac-10
Oregon State and USC won last week to remain tied for first place in the Pacific-10. The Beavers need two more wins to advance to the Rose Bowl.
Oregon State 34, California 21
Nice win for the Beavers. Oregon State got a kickoff return for a touchdown from James Rodgers to erase an early deficit and an interception return for a touchdown from Keenan Lewis in the final minute to clinch the victory. In betweek, Jacquizz Rodgers rushed for 144 yards on 27 carries. Javhid Best was solid for the Golden Bears, registering 116 yards on the ground including a 65-yard touchdown that got California within 27-21.
Oregon 55, Arizona 45
I thought Arizona had a proud defense. USC managed just 17 points against the Wildcats. Oregon’s output was very impressive. Arizona needs to redouble its effort as Oregon State visits Tucson this week.
USC 45, Stanford 23
The Trojans struggled for third quarters before putting away the Cardinal in the fourth period. USC scored 28 consecutive points to break open a 17-17 game. Stanford Coach Jim Harbaugh is now the best friend of some gamblers and the worst enemy of other bettors after calling and converting a long touchdown pass on the final play on the game. The Trojans were inconsistent but had more than enough talent to win.
UCLA 27, Washington 7
The Bruins won their first road game in 14 months. UCLA could still qualify for a bowl by winning its last two games. This contest was in doubt most of the way but Kahlil Bell’s one-yard plunge on the first play of the fourth quarter put UCLA ahead, 24-7. The Huskies remain winless as they fought hard but lost on Senior Night. Washington ends its campaign with two road games.
Arizona State 31, Washington State 0
At least the Cougars have the Apple Cup this week and a trip to Hawaii next week. Visiting Honolulu can brighten nearly anyone’s spirit. The Sun Devils still have a chance to be bowl-eligible.
