Most Loyal NFL Fans

By Danny Thornton | August 19th, 2008

It is funny that some of the worst teams in the NFL can carry some of the most loyal fans. Take for instance the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have posted only 2 winning seasons since the start of the millennium. That was 2002 when they had a 9-7 season record and went to the playoffs. The other season was 2007 when they held a 10-6 record and did not go to the playoffs. With that said, their fans are the most loyal of any. Year in and year out the dawg pound is full for each and every game. They come to cheer or they come to boo, either does not matter as they come to watch football. See the complete list below.

1. Cleveland Browns
2. Kansas City Chiefs
3. Philadelphia Eagles
4. Green Bay Packers
5. Dallas Cowboys
6. Buffalo Bills
7. Seattle Seahawks
8. Denver Broncos
9. Baltimore Ravens
10. Washington Redskins

I think the Ravens fan would have been leaving in droves had Brian Billick not been replaced with Harbaugh.
Phillies fans are CrAzY, wonder how they will receive Donovan? They need to embrace him to avoid a repeat of 2007’s 8-8 record and a last-place finish in the NFC East.

Rich, I would agree with that statement.

Hey Danny,
You know the Browns fans have earned the right to be at the top of this list. They have not been to a Super Bowl in recent memory, lost one franchise already to Baltimore, and have had the bad luck of being a reinvented expansion team. And yet they remain…

Too bad we can’t have Falcons fans like that.

Great post, Dan!

JBs last blog post..10 Signs that You Might Be a Braves Fan

JB, I can remember seeing the Georgia Dome empty by halftime of the game against the Colts. It was sad.

…lest we forget MY team - the Miami Dolphins! Granted, we have lost a little interest since Dan Marino left, but I subscribe to Direct TV’s Sunday Ticket just so I can see them lose each week. :)

As much as I would have loved to add them, they did not make the list that was sent to me.

Danny, the Jets and the Dolphins are in our division so I do feel sorry for the fans. Though, with the outspoken Dolphin fans in the Fantasy Football League, I get over it quickly.

Debbie, I used to feel sorry for the Dolphins fans until I went to the game.

Great post ! I want to know when you update your blog, where can i subscribe to your blog? :) :) :)

There are 2 ways to subscribe. The first is on the right side bar at the top and is a subscription by email. The second is down toward the bottom and is a subscriber via feed reader.

Your post is very valuable, thanks

Very good article, thank you!

no problem. Glad that you liked it.

How can you not have the steelers in you list. I would argue them to be top 3!

Steve, the biggest reason is because this is not “My” list. When they did the research for this list they took in several factors, such as attendance, ticket sales, and actually people that showed up. This is what actually compiled this list, and Pittsburgh did not make it.

This info is not correct… pittsburgh fans are the most loyal fans in the NFL and also have the largest fan base…
The Steelers have a tradition of having a large fanbase, which has spread from Pittsburgh. In August 2008, ESPN.com ranked Steelers’ fans as the best in the NFL, citing their “unbelievable” sellout streak of 299 consecutive games. While the team gained a large fan base nationally based on their success in the 1970s, many consider the collapse of the steel industry in Pittsburgh at the end of the 70’s dynasty into the 1980s to be a large catalyst for the unusually high fan base in other cities, since many native Pittsburghers were forced to move elsewhere to find work, causing Western Pennsylvania to lose nearly half of its population. Examples of this have been shown when the Steelers are on the road, and the stadiums still having a sizable amount of Steeler fans; in particular, teams with usually low fan turnout at home that would otherwise require a local blackout on television usually end up selling out when hosting the Steelers due to Steeler fans buying up the tickets. The Cincinnati Bengals used to be perhaps the best example of this, as the team only sold out home games when the Steelers or Cleveland Browns were playing in Cincinnati, with the respective fans of the other teams buying up the tickets.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have sold out every home game since the 1972 season. In November 2007, the Steelers were ranked as the most popular local sports franchise out of the 122 teams in the NHL, NBA, MLB and NFL, by a study from Turnkey Sports. Another study ranked Pittsburgh as having the highest percentage of female fans of their local football team, ranking twice as high as the average city. An aspect of Steelers fandom, the Terrible Towel, is “arguably the best-known fan symbol of any major pro sports team”.

In 2008, another sold out season, and not just in pittsburgh…but when on the road…a sea of black and gold at every game. Brian from pittsburgh

Is it not correct because you say it is not correct? I think not. If you google the title alone, you will see that the top 3 articles in google are on this very subject. Here is the link from biz journal.
